BNP holds protest marches across Dhaka during blockade

The BNP and its affiliate parties held separate protest marches on Sunday morning in different parts of the capital in support of the ongoing blockade and non-cooperation movement.

They chanted slogans demanding the resignation of the government, election under a non-partisan caretaker government and release of all detained leaders and activists including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Swechchhasebak Dal brought out a procession in Dhanmondi in support of the blockade. Swechchhasebak Dal Senior Vice-President Yasin Ali and Organizing Secretary Nazmul Hasan led the procession.

At that time, the leaders and activists tried to block the road.

Dhaka district BNP President Khandaker Abu Ashfaq brought out another procession on the Dhaka-Aricha highway.  At the end of the procession, police came and arrested 10-12 people and took them to the police station.

Jubo Dal leaders and activists brought out a procession from Motijheel's Shapla Chattar to Notre Dame College Road to make the blockade successful.

Jubo Dal Joint Secretary Billal Hossain Tarek, Assistant General Secretary Shah Nasiruddin Rumon and other leaders and activists of the organization were present in the procession held on Sunday morning.

Additionally, under the leadership of Dhaka Metropolitan West Chhatra Dal President Abul Kalam Azad Nasir, many processions were held in different parts of the city.

This is the 12th such blockade called by the opposition parties since October 31, and the first since the announcement of BNP’s non-cooperation movement against the government on December 20.

The blockade began at 6am and will end at 6pm on Sunday. The presence of public transport and commuters on Dhaka streets seemed normal, despite tension and fear of arson attacks.
