The 14-party alliance will participate in the January 7 election together under the leadership of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The alliance leaders took the decision at a closed-door meeting at Ganabhaban on Monday night. Sources said all parties submitted their list of candidates at the meeting.
However, it was not disclosed how many seats the Awami League will leave for its alliance partners.
The Awami League president has instructed the alliance coordinator, Amir Hossain Amu, and party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader to follow up on the matter as the deadline for party nomination declarations ends on December 17. The 14 parties will finalise the matter within the timeframe.
During the meeting, Sheikh Hasina briefed the alliance leaders on the recent developments in the political arena. She also shared information on the national and international pressure on the election and urged everyone to be united before and after the polls.
The ruling party chief instructed the alliance leaders not to withdraw the party candidates from the electoral race.
There are a lot of parties that want to join the electoral alliance of the Awami League-led 14 parties. It was decided that the alliance would not include any party, but there could be some strategic alliances before the election.
The meeting started at 6pm and continued till 10:30pm with a dinner break, according to the sources.
Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, JaSoD President Hasanul Huq Inu, Tarikat Federation President Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua, and Ganatantri Party acting president Dr Sohidullah Shikdar, among others, were present.
Obaidul Quader will brief the media regarding the outcome of the meeting on Tuesday morning, said Office Secretary Biplab Barua.
