Election schedule: Opposition parties call hartal protesting announcement

Different political parties, including Ganatantra Mancha, Bangladesh Labour Party and Left Democratic Alliance (LDA( have called nationwide hartal protesting the schedule announced by the Election Commission (EC) for the upcoming 12th national parliamentary polls.

Junaid Saki, one of the leaders of the political alliance, called for a day-long hartal on Thursday. 

Besides, the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA), a platform of left-leaning political parties, called for a nationwide half-day general strike on Thursday to protest the announcement.

Ruhin Hossain Prince, general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, and also a leader of the LDA, made the announcement on Wednesday evening. 

They will observe the strike from 6am to 2pm.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Labour Party Chairman Dr Mostafizur Rahman Iran called for nationwide hartal on November 19-20.

The 12th national parliamentary election will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced the schedule for the upcoming general election on Wednesday evening while addressing the nation.
