BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah has accused the government of crafting an ‘evil design’ to promulgate a state of emergency in its last-ditch effort to hang onto power.
“There’s no scope for promulgating the state of emergency unless a severe natural disaster or turmoil hits the country, but the government is maneuvering to promulgate emergency to prolong its power,” he said.
Rafiqul came up with the allegation while addressing a discussion and milad mahfil arranged yesterday by Nagarik Sangsad at the Jatiya Press Club marking the 69th birthday of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The BNP leader alleged that the government brought the 15th amendment to the constitution with a motive to perpetuate its power. “They (AL leaders) are saying that the Prime Minster will stay in office on completion of her tenure. But there’s no scope for hanging onto power after the end of a five-year term.”
He reminded the opposition leaders and activists that the ruling party is deliberately trying to push the country into a deep crisis.
“They won’t be able to do this if we stay on the streets.” l
