No dialogue or consensus with BNP: Ashraf

The ruling Awami League has decided not to hold dialogues with the main opposition BNP or reaching a consensus over thepoll-time government ahead of the next general polls.

LGRD Minister and the AL spokesperson, Syed Ashraful Islam yesterday said the government would not hold any dialogue or reach an agreementwith those, who celebrate “fake” birthdayson the national mourning day.

He was addressing a discussion at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre,in remembrance of the 38th death anniversary of the father of the nation Bangabndhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ashraf, criticised the opposition leader, Khaleda Zia for observing her birthday on August 15 and said, “Dialogue with who? It is impossible to hold dialogues or reach a consensus with them.”

“Many things could be said under political consideration, but celebrating your birthday on the day we lost the father of the nation, is not a political issue. The Prime Minister would never accept those who makes fun of the national mourning day by cutting cakes,” he said.

Ashraf, however, on Thursday asked the BNP to join the parliament and place any constructive proposal rather than taking a path of protests, as no solution would come through it.

The AL general secretary was also critical of foreign diplomats for “interfering” in the country's internal affairs.

“They always (diplomats) talk about human rights.I often talk to the diplomats of other countries, I know what they want,” Ashraf said.

The AL general secretary asked the party members across the country to follow the directives of the party president Sheikh Hasina.

Addressing the same programme, Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddique asked party leaders and activists to resist the BNP-Jamaat and Hefazat men.

“Those who kill innocent people through enforcing Hartals and movement, find them and give a good reply,” he told the members of the party.

Regarding Khaleda Zia’s birthday, Latif Siddique, also the Jute and Textile Minister, said Khaleda is celebrating her birthday on 15th August only as an act of political vengeance.

The AL presidium member also turned down any possibility of reaching any consensus with BNP.

The discussion was organised by the ruling Awami League and chaired by party presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury.
