Jamaat-e-Islami accused the Election Commission (EC) of trying to bar it from taking part in the national elections.
Syed Abdul Md Taher, Jamaat’s international affairs secretary, made the accusation while talking to journalists after a meeting between a six-member delegation of the party and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Sunday.
Denouncing the EC’s plans to not allow indicted war criminals to take part in the elections in any capacity, Taher slammed the commission, saying they had made the decision with the intention of excluding them.
CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad denied the accusation, saying: “We will do what the existing laws tell us.”
He also said the EC, staying within legal boundaries, would do everything needed to conduct a free and fair election.
