BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said the BNP would set a new trend by forming government through free and fair elections.
She was speaking at an iftar party on Thursday. It was organised by the BNP at the parliament’s Lunch and Dining Hall to honour the newly-elected local government representatives.
Khaleda said the people of the country were passing through a hard time. “Let’s pray to the almighty to free the country from the clutches of the government’s tyranny and misrules,” she said.
“We will not compromise with corruption and misdeeds. We will set a new form of government through free and fair elections,” the three-time premier said.
“Bangladesh is a small country with huge population. So if we work together we will be able to turn the country into a respected country in the global arena,” she said. The BNP chief advised the elected local government representatives to work for the well-being of the people. “Whenever we will be back in power we will show respect to your logical demands.” Naming the government corrupt, and a failure, she said: “It is not possible to establish rule of law in this country until the prime minister exits parliament. People want this government to be replaced.” Khaleda said the victory of five city corporation polls enhanced the logicality of their demand to hold national elections under a non-partisan interim government. She convened the elected representatives to intensify movement after Eid demanding introduction to non-partisan interim government to oversee a credible election. “We want your support to protect democracy and the voting rights of people. We believe that we will compel the government to introduce non-partisan interim government through movement.” “None of the election was held free and fair under this government. In Gazipur they tried to rig vote but their conspiracies went into vein. So elections cannot be held in free and fair manner under this government,” she said. The newly-elected mayors, MA Mannan from Gazipur, Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul from Rajshahi, Moniruzzaman Moni from Khulna, Ahsan Habib Kamal from Barisal, and Ariful Haque Chowdhury from Sylhet addressed the party while more than 2,000 local government representatives across the country participated. Khaleda exchanged greetings with the guests. Joint Secretary General of the party Ruhul Kabir Rizvi delivered the welcome speech. A doa was offered seeking peace and prosperity of the country.
