Home minister: Awami League believes in dialogue

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday said that the Awami League believes in dialogue and that there is no alternative to talks and discussions.

“One of our leaders spoke about having a dialogue with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and we believe in mutual discussions,” he said while speaking to reporters at the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

His statement came just a day after Awami League Advisory Council Member Amir Hossain Amu said the government was ready to hold talks with the opposition in front of delegation members of the United Nations if necessary with a view to resolving election issues.

In response to a question about whether the Jamaat-e-Islami's rally will get permission, the minister said Jamaat is currently not recognized as a political party by the Election Commission; therefore, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner will make the final call on whether to permit the rally.

The possibility of vandalism or disorder will be considered before making the final decision, he said.

Regarding the discussions of foreign diplomats with various political parties, the home minister said that it is a matter concerning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The ministry is closely monitoring the situation and expects ambassadors to adhere to diplomatic protocols and fulfil their assigned duties appropriately,” said the home minister.
