An advisory council member of the ruling Awami League on Saturday alleged that the BNP was trying to make the Gazipur City Corporation election questionable in a bid to strengthen its long-standing demand for a non-partisan caretaker government.
During a press briefing held at party president Sheikh Hasina's Dhanmondi office, Tofail Ahmed said the opposition BNP's demand would be proved illogical as a free and fair election would be held.
He also said the BNP’s allegation about the city corporation polls being rigged was a proof of its fear that its candidate would be defeated.
On Saturday, BNP’s acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, alleged that the government was plotting to change the election results in its favour.
“The BNP has threatened several times to oust the government but failed. This time also it will not be successful. It has rung the bell many times and there have been many 48-hour ultimatums. It may try again, but the bell will not ring,” Tofail said.
He claimed the voting process in Gazipur was held “peacefully” and all elections under the incumbent government were held in a free and fair manner. “The next [national] election will be held in the same manner.”
Ruling party leaders including Mohammad Nasim, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Faridunahar Layli, Asim Kumar Ukil, Mrinal Kanti Das, among others, were present at the briefing.
