AL rebels become Araihazar, Gopaldi mayors

Two rebel candidates of Awami League, Habibur Rahman and Halim Shikdar have won in Araihazar Sadar and Gopaldi municipalities respectively, defeating the Awami League and BNP-backed candidates.

Both of them stood against their party’s decision by participating in the polls.

Habibur Rahman secured 5,097 votes out of 17,137 votes while his nearest contender Sundaor Ali got 4,417 votes. Halim Shikdar bagged 8,714 votes out of 24,523 while his nearest candidate Abul Bashar Kashu got 6,107 votes.

Araiahazar Upazila Election Officer Md Morshed Alam announced the results.

Polling in the two newly formed municipalities, Araihazar Sadar and Gopaldi in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj, concluded Saturday without major untoward incidents amid a security blanket of law enforcement agencies and mobile courts.

A reporter for the Bengali daily Dinkal MR Kamal was allegedly assaulted by local lawmaker Nazrul Islam Babu’s nephew Iqbal Hossain.

Police arrested a fake voter when he went to cast vote.

During the polling hours a large number of voters of both the municipalities gave votes in a free and fair atmosphere. The election office of Araihazar upazila said almost 70% votes had been cast at Araihazar Sadar municipality and 75% at Gopaldi municipality.

Twelve candidates vied for the mayoralty of Araihazar Sadar while three contended at Gopaldi.

Five hundred policemen, six mobile courts and Rab members were on duty during the polling hours.
