Ershad stands beside Azmat Ullah in GCC polls

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Thursday said his party extended full support to Awami League-led grand alliance chosen candidate Azmat Ullah Khan in the forthcoming election to Gazipur City Corporation.

“Since we are in the grand alliance, we extend our support to the grand alliance picked candidate,” Ershad, also former president of the country, told journalists while addressing a press conference in the capital.

Jatiya Party is a key ally in the Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance.

Ershad also asked the party’s leaders and activists in Gazipur to give Azmat Ullah all out support in helping him to clinch the polls.

The maiden election to the Gazipur City Corporation is scheduled to be held on July 6.

Earlier this month, Awami League-backed candidate Azmat Ullah and opposition BNP-backed contestant MA Mannan visited Ershad separately to bag ‘support’ for Jatiya Party to win the mayoral race.

Coming out from Ershad’s residence, both Azmat and Mannan claimed that they received support from Ershad which, eventually, created confusion among the leaders and activists of Jatiya Party in Gazipur about the stance of the party.
