The pre-announced protest of the opposition BNP started on Tuesday in front of the party's central office at Naya Paltan.
The program started with a Quran recitation at 2pm.
However, BNP activists started to congregate in front of the office. They were seen chanting slogans as they gathered around the party office since morning.
The traffic movement on the road in front of the BNP office was halted from 2pm. However, the opposite road was open till 3pm.
Law enforcement agencies have already taken position in the area to avoid any untoward situation since Tuesday morning. As many as 50 policemen are seen stationed at the Nightingale intersection.
Paltan police station Inspector (Operation) Hiranmoy Baruri told reporters BNP has permission to hold a rally on Tuesday. Therefore, additional police were not deployed.
Earlier on December 10, Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain announced this program at the mass rally of the BNP at the Golapbag field.
The program was held in protest of the arrest of party leaders and activists, including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and the “killing” of BNP leader Maqbul during the Paltan clash.
The party leaders demanded the immediate release of all arrested and detained leaders and activists.
Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain will appear as the chief guest in this protest program under the leadership of Amanullah Aman, convener of BNP's Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP.
