Voting begins in Kishoreganj-4 by-polls

Voting for the Kishoreganj-4 constituency by-election is underway in 118 polling centres in three upazilas – Itna, Mithamoin and Astagram - on Wednesday morning.

Rezwan Ahmed Taufiq, son of President Abdul Hamid, is the ruling party candidate in the by-polls.

He will have to face strong challenges from Awami League’s rebel candidate Syed Mohitul Islam Ashim.

Ashim cast his vote at Government Primary School of Adarsha Astagram Kastul Union in the early hours, reports Banglanews24.com.

Presiding Officer Md Zamiruddin of Borohati Madrasa Centre in the Itna upazila told our correspondent Rabiul Islam, who is now in the area to cover the polls, that voting has been going on peacefully in the centre.

The Jatiya Sangsad seat for the constituency fell vacant when Abdul Hamid was elected as President of the country.

Considering the entire security, the Election Commission (EC) had identified 104 centres out of the total 118 as risky.

The EC sources said three-tier security measures have been adopted to secure the risky centres. A total of 6,000 law enforcers from different forces have been deployed in these centres.

There are 277,126 voters in the constituency.
