The US embassy in Dhaka on Thursday extended its condolences to the families of those killed and injured a day earlier at Naya Paltan in Dhaka.
“We are concerned about reports of intimidation and political violence in Dhaka and call on everyone to respect the rule of law and to refrain from violence, harassment and intimidation,” it said in a Facebook post.
“We encourage government authorities to investigate these reports of violence and to protect the fundamental freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly.”
A man was killed and several others were injured in a clash between the police and BNP activists in front of the party's office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
The clash broke out when BNP men took up positions outside the party office and defied a police order to leave the place, witnesses said.
At one stage, the police lobbed teargas shells and charged batons to disperse them.
BNP activists responded by pelting brick chips at police, triggering the clash.
