AL council in Comilla: Journo injured in clash between supporters of 2 MPs

A local photojournalist was injured during a clash between supporters of two members of parliament during the triennial conference of the Comilla city unit of Awami League on Saturday. 

The clash erupted during Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader's speech in the morning.

Witnesses said they had heard gunshots and explosion during that time.

The injured, Daily Prothom Alo's Comilla photojournalist M Sadek, rushed to Kandirpar intersection outside the rally venue after hearing the sound of multiple cocktail explosions. 

At that time a splinter hit his neck. He is currently undergoing treatment at a local private hospital.

The clashes broke out between the supporters of Comilla city Awami League President AKM Bahauddin and the MP for reserved women's seat Anjum Sultana Sima.

A supporter of Anjum Sultana, Nur-ur-Rahman, told Bangla Tribune that neither Sultana nor he was invited to the conference, so he informed the central committee of the party. 

“As I and other supporters returned from the place, supporters of AKM Bahauddin engaged in a series of chases and counter chases,” he added. 

District Superintendent of Police Abdul Mannan told the Bangla Tribune: "Several clashes took place between the groups. The situation is now under control.”

He later added that he did not know how the journalist was injured. 

The triennial conference of the Comilla city unit of Awami League began at the city's Town Hall ground on Saturday.

The event was inaugurated by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister.

Presidium member of the party Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim spoke as the chief guest while another presidium member Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya was present as special guest.

Mahbubul Alam Hanif, joint general secretary of Awami League, and Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan, organizing secretary of the party, among others, joined the council.
