Khaleda Zia’s family seeks extension of jail sentence suspension

BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s family has sought an extension of the suspension of her jail sentences in graft cases.

Khaleda’s Personal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar and Bijan Kanti Das, member of the chairperson’s advisory council, sent a letter to the home ministry in this regard on Sunday.

In the letter, Khaleda’s younger brother Shamim Iskander asked for the extension of the suspension of her jail term.

He also asked for her unconditional release and permission for her to travel abroad for advanced treatment.

BNP media wing member Shairul Kabir Khan told Bangla Tribune that the letter has already reached the home ministry.

If the government approves the application, Khaleda Zia will be able to stay out of prison till March 25, 2023.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told the Daily Star that he has received the application and the relevant process was underway.

He added that the application does not mean that the suspension will be extended automatically.

A decision will be taken on the matter after the file reaches the prime minister’s office

The file will go to the prime minister's office for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's opinion and then a final decision will be taken on this issue.
