Finally, the Awami League renegade mayor candidate Jahangir Alam quits the mayoral race in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election.
Addressing a press conference at district AL headquarter on Sunday, the businessman cum politician Jahangir declared that he had extended his support towards his party-picked veteran politician Azmat Ullah Khan.
Earlier, followers and supporters of Jahangir laid a siege on Rajbari Road in Gazipur town in a bid to bar Jahangir from joining the press conference fearing his quitting.
Meanwhile, an altercation between the supporters of Jahangir and Azmat Ullah took place on Rajbari Road when Azmat Ullah reached there with his followers.
Local AL lawmakers AKM Mozammel Hossain, also the president of district AL, and Zahid Hasan brought the situation under control, and also took Jahangir Alam to the party office.
"I was a candidate in the polls, and had development plan for the city people," Jahangir stated in the crowded press conference.
He hoped his promises would be implemented once Azmat Ullah Khan was voted to mayor's office.
Jahangir read out his development plans and urged people to give Azmat Ullah Khan their mandates.
While speaking at the press conference, Azmat Ullah Khan said: “Party supported me. So, I am very grateful, and we have to work unitedly.”
Jahangir, also a former BCL leader decided to contest the polls although he failed to bag party support. AL extended its support towards Azmat Ullah Khan, also the general secretary to district AL.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister also Awami League President Sheikh Hasina directed Jahangir to quit the electoral race and extend his support towards Azmat Ullah, said sources.
The maiden election to Gazipur City Corporation is scheduled to be held on July 6.
