The main opposition BNP on Sunday demanded deployment of army in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) area during the maiden election of the city corporation, scheduled on July 6.
A two-member delegation of BNP led by party’s Standing Committee member MK Anwar placed the demand before Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed while the delegation met Rakibuddin at his office around 4pm.
Before leaving the premises of the election commission in the capital, MK Anwar said it is impossible to hold a free and fair election in Gazipur without deploying army.
“In order to hold the election in a free and fair manner, the election commission should ensure deployment of army in the city corporation area,” Anwar commented.
BNP has extended its support towards party MA Mannan to contest the polls while ruling Awami League conveyed support to party leader Azmat Ullah.
