BNP acting general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday termed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech in parliament “an ominous sign for the country”.
He also said her speech regarding the opposition’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government is an “autocratic and undemocratic one”.
Mirza Fakhrul talked the journalists after a meeting of the 18-party alliance at the BNP headquarters at Nayapaltan.
The prime minister on Sunday told the parliament the next national election could not be held if the opposition stuck to its demand for the restoration of the caretaker government.
She rejected the opposition’s demand for the reinstatement of the caretaker government provision in the constitution, saying the results of the city corporation polls proved the Awami League-led elected government and the Election Commission (EC) could hold fair polls.
However, Mirza Fakhrul also gave congratulations to the four newly elected mayors in the city polls while he talked to the journalists.
He also informed the press that the 18-party alliance will hold a rally in every upazila and thana on June 22 to protest extortion of money from opposition activists and demanding withdrawal of cases against opposition leaders and activists and religious leaders.
