The newly elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation Moniruzzaman Moni visited the residence of outgoing mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque on Sunday.
Moni, who swept Saturday’s poll with support from the main opposition BNP, visited his predecessor’ house Khaleque at Gagon Babu Road at noon, with sweets and flowers.
While talking to journalists, Moni called his visit to his election rival a part of the democratic custom, and also a sign of respect for the former mayor.
Minutes after reaching Khaleque’s house, Moni hugged Khaleque and shook hands with him.
Khaleque contested in the polls with support from the ruling Awami League.
The newly elected mayor Moni sought advice from the outgoing mayor to run the city corporation successfully. Khaleque assured Moni he would provide the necessary support to serve the people of the city.
Moni also visited AL-backed councillor candidate Azmal Ahmed Tapan’s residence upon hearing the news of Tapan’s mother’s sudden demise.
