BNP-supported Arif new Sylhet mayor

Opposition-backed Ariful Haque Chowdhury has become the mayor-elect of Sylhet City Corporation.

Returning Officer for the Sylhet city polls SM Ejharul Haque has announced Arif winner around 11:50pm, reports our correspondent Mohammad Al-Masum Molla, who is in Sylhet now to cover the polls. Meanwhile, Returning Officer's office has banned all kind of rally and processions until Monday midnight. 

According to latest results from returning officer’s office, Arif bagged 107,330 votes while rulling alliance-backed Badar Uddin A Kamran secured 72,173 votes.

Meanwhile, in a rare gesture, outgoing mayor Kamran has congratulated mayor-elect Arif for his win.

Out of total 291,046 voters in the city, 180,525 people had cast votes. The voting ended in Sylhet’s 128 polling centres at 4pm without any major untoward incident.

In an immediate reaction, Arif thanked all his supporters to extend their help and support for his run.

Meanwhile, supporters of Arif were seen celebrating at different places in the city after the announcement of his victory. They took out victory processions at some parts of the metropolis.

The third contender for the mayoral post was businessman Salah Uddin Rimon who is in the race with poll symbol of ‘lock’.

Sylhet City Corporation was established in 2002. Electronic voting machines were used in three polling centers in Sylhet.
