BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned the government of waging tougher movements to oust the government if opposition candidates were defeated through election engineering.
“Fearing defeat, the ruling party is hatching conspiracy to defeat opposition candidates in the city corporation elections,” Fakhrul said while addressing a rally as chief guest at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city yesterday.
The Government will not be allowed to hold the national elections under the party government, no matter how much the government tortures the opposition leaders and activists added Fakhrul.
BNP on Monday announced that it would hold a rally in front of its Naya Paltan central office and sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) authorities.
DMP gave BNP permission on Tuesday for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Uddyan instead of Naya Paltan.
Fakhrul also criticised the government for passing the Anti-Terrorism Bill (Amendment) 2013 in the parliament which he said aimed to control opposition activists and urged its cancellation.
BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed urged the government to set an agenda for holding dialogue over election-period government if the government really wants to resolve the on-going political crisis.
Otherwise, the current political turmoil will be settled through mass movement, he warned.
BNP Dhaka Mohanagar Unit convener Sadek Hossain Khoka said Tarique Rahman would return home in time. Threats of arrests will not stop him, he said, adding Tarique will join politics.
