All seven members of parliament of the BNP have announced their resignation from parliament at the party's Dhaka rally as per a decision of its standing committee.
They announced resignations in a series of speeches there from 1:20pm on Saturday.
The seven lawmakers are Md Zahidur Rahman from Thakurgaon-3, Md Mosharof Hosen from Bogra-4, Gulam Mohammad Siraj from Bogra-6, Md Harunur Rashid from Chapainawabganj-3, Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan from Brahmanbaria-2 and reserved seat MP Rumeen Farhana.
Lawmaker Siraj said: "I submitted my resignation letter to the acting chairman of the party, at the standing committee meeting last Friday. We will not go to parliament again."
"We want to announce our resignation from parliament with this huge crowd as witness. There are seven of us MPs. This decision was made in the standing committee meeting chaired by our leader, Tarique Rahman, on Friday."
UNB quoted Rumeen as saying that the MPs had tendered their resignations through email and would submit physical copies to the speaker on Sunday.
“We do not have any benefit to stay as MPs. We joined parliament to see how much space we get. But it is all the same to have the membership and not, so we have announced our resignation,” she said.
Earlier, the party MPs were asked to resign from parliament as the party will announce a 10-point demand including the dissolution of parliament at the rally.
The BNP is holding it last rally, where it will announce its demands for launching a simultaneous movement.
In October, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who is currently in police custody, said MPs from his party were ready to resign from parliament as their main goal was to restore democracy by ousting the Awami League government from power.
In response, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said parliament would not stop functioning if the BNP lawmakers submitted their resignation.
