The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday, served a show cause notice on the Returning Officer for the Gazipur City Corporation polls, Matiar Rahman.
The EC also served show cause notices on the deputy commissioner and district superintendent of police asking for their written rejoinder within 24 hours.
On Tuesday, the returning officer of Gazipur City Corporation, allegedly did not take any initiative as the 14-party backed candidate Azmat Ullah held meetings, violating the electoral code of conduct. The EC officials cited the incident, as the reason behind the show cause.
Upon receiving the notice, the returning officer served show cause notice on aspirant mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah, directing submission of a written answer within 24 hours.
The notice asked him to specify why he held election campaigning after announcement of the poll schedule.
Gazipur District Election Officer, Hasanuzzaman, informed that Azmat Ullah on Tuesday held rallies and processions. violating the electoral code of conduct.
According to the section 4 of electoral code of conduct, no election campaigns can be held within 21 days of the polling day.
Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz said the EC is aware of the matter and had asked the concerned authorities to take the requisite action under the law, he added.
