Mayoral candidates backed by the country’s two main political parties have started their official campaigns for Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal city corporation elections, scheduled to be held on June 15.
As per the party’s central decision, most of the rebel mayoral candidates of both Awami League and BNP have withdrawn their nominations on Sunday, the last day on which they could have done so.
Rebel candidate of Awami League Mahmudul Haque Khan Mamun and Jatiya Party backed candidate Shafiqul Islam did not withdraw their nominations from the Rajshahi City Corporation election.
The ruling party backed candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, BNP backed Mosaddak Hossain Bulbul and independent candidate Habibur Rahman have started their campaign for the RCC poll.
In Khulna City Corporation, former mayor and Awami League backed candidate Talukdar Abdul Khalek and BNP backed candidate Md Moniruzzaman will contest the poll. Other mayoral candidates, with the exception of Jatiya Party backed Shafiqul Islam, have withdrawn their nominations.
Elsewhere in Sylhet, three rebel candidates of BNP and one candidate of Jamaat-e-Islam have withdrawn their nominations on the last day for withdrawal from the city corporation poll. As a result, former mayor and Awami League backed candidate Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, BNP backed Ariful Haque Chowdhury and independent candidate Salauddin Rimon will contest in the SCC election.
The 18-party alliance nominated Ahsan Habib Kamal, Awami League backed Shawkat Hossain Hiron and rebel candidate of Grand alliance Mahmudul Haque Khan Mamun will contest for the mayor post in Barisal city corporation poll. As per the party’s central decision, BNP rebel candidates Kamrul Ahsan Shahin and Abaydul Haq Chan have withdrawn their nominations.
