Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of BNP, went on a rampage and vandalised at least 20 vehicles in different parts of the city Monday, protesting the arrest warrant issued against Tarique Rahman, senior vice chairman of BNP.
As a part of nationwide demonstrations Jagannath University JCD activists brought out a procession in Laxmi Bazar of Old Dhaka around 10am, but they turned disruptive and vandalised vehicles including five private cars, four human-haulers and a CNG-run auto rickshaw near the Ikrampur intersection.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sutrapur police station said he heard about the incidents but no one was arrested because the JCD protestors fled before police reached the area. The OC said the situation was soon under control.
According to police, JCD men damaged four vehicles in Fakirerpool and three in Hatirpool around 11am.
JCD also brought out a procession at Bangshal around 1:30pm, when they damaged several vehicles. A team from Bangshal police station used batons to disperse them. Two JCD activists were detained from there.
Earlier in the day, police from New Market detained eight JCD activists of University of Dhaka when they brought out a procession in Hatirpool around 10am.
Police used batons to disperse another procession in Mohakhali by JCD Titumir College unit in front of the college around 10:30 am. Witnesses said the protestors attacked several vehicles during the procession.
Our Narayanganj correspondent reports, at least twelve JCD activists were injured when police used batons against a demonstration near DIT at BB road around 12noon. Narayanganj city JCD unit joint convener Rashedur Rahman Ruso said they marched to demand the withdrawal of Tarique Rahman’s arrest warrant but police used batons indiscriminately against them.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Narayanganj sadar police station SM Monjur Kader said the protesters were injured when they were fleeing the area.
