BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday sent a legal notice through his lawyer to Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud for making “derogatory remarks” against him, reports UNB.
Barrister Kaisar Kamal sent the notice on behalf of Tarique, now living in London since 2008.
The notice asked the minister to apologise unconditionally to Tarique Rahman or prove in two weeks’ time the allegations he brought against him or face legal action.
According to the notice, Hasan Mahmud, in a speech during the inauguration of a commuter train service in Chittagong on May 25, compared Tarique Rahman with Bengali fiction character ‘Raghu Dakat’ which was published in different newspapers the following day.
“The minister said Tarique, a terrorist and corrupt man, had been involved in robbery at Hawa Bhaban and BNP proved it a corrupt and terrorist-friendly political party by terming Tarique the country’s future Prime Minister.”
“The minister’s defamatory comment published in the newspapers tarnishing the image of Tarique Rahman, a popular politician, son of late president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, both at home and abroad,” the notice reads.
The BNP leader faces at least a dozen of criminal cases, including that of money laundering.
