No election without non-party govt: BNP

BNP Chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu on Sunday said BNP would neither join any election without non-party government nor it will allow such polls in the country, reports UNB.

He said the government must arrange the next national election under a non-party and neutral administration to ensure the participation of all political parties. “Or else, BNP won’t allow any election under any partisan government, if the government desires to do so.”

Dudu made the remark at a press conference at Nayapaltan BNP central office in the morning.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s Saturday’s remark that there will be no Magura-Mirpur-like polls, the BNP spokesperson said: “You [PM] will have to make it clear whether you want to arrange a Sheikh Mujib-like election of 1973 or Bhola-like ones.”

He went on: “You said there’ll be no Magura-like election. But you were in movement demanding the caretaker government system after the Magura polls and you demanded a provision in the Constitution regarding the caretaker government.”

Dudu said the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia had accepted the demand “but you [PM] have scrapped it returning to power”.

He wanted to know from the Prime Minister why they are in such a dismal situation like in Pakistan. “You [PM] must reply to it.”

About restriction on rallies and interference on media, Dudu said this restriction will have to be withdrawn without any delay.

About hartal, he said the countrywide shutdown is being observed peacefully and spontaneously across the country

He alleged that police arrested many leaders and activists across the country, including the capital, during hartal hours. “They’ll have to be released immediately.”

Responding to a question, Dudu said their movement is on and it will continue until their demands are met. “They’ll come up with tougher programmes later.”
