Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) will go to polls for the first time on July 6, Election Commission announced on Wednesday.
The EC has also fixed July 3 for holding Kishoreganj by-poll. It fell vacant after Abdul Hamid was sworn-in as the President last month.
Declaring the schedule at a press conference at the EC secretariat, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad outlined some measures including the use of CCTV (closed circuit television) at polling centres and possibility of using EVM (electronic voting machine) during polling.
In Gazipur, the last day for filing nominations has been set for June 6 and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is June 17. Election officials will scrutinise applications on June 9 and 10.
The government in January upgraded Gazipur municipality to City Corporation.
According to the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, election to GCC must be held in 180 days since the date of declaring it a city corporation.
