BNP still awaits permission to hold rally

The BNP-led 18-party alliance is yet to get Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s nod to hold its scheduled rally on Wednesday.

If the alliance does not get permission, it would be the third time that the opposition has been denied approval to hold rallies.

However, the alliance said they were still hopeful of getting the permission.

“We did not give them (BNP) permission till now,” said Masudur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday night.

Earlier, the party announced a rally on May 7, but police had imposed ban on all sorts of meetings and rallies. Later, the party announced another rally on May 13 which shared the same fate. Now, for the third time, the alliance has not been given the go-ahead to hold a rally.

“We are neither postponing nor cancelling our programme rather, trying to get permission for the rally,” said Abdul Latif Jony, assistant office secretary of BNP, told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Abdus Salam, member secretary of Dhaka city unit BNP, said, they will address a press conference on Wednesday at 11.00am on this issue.

BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia on May 4 had said, “If the government dilly dallies to make any specific announcement on non-party poll-time government by 48 hours, we will take the street and will not care for permission.”
