No chance of caretaker system: Dipu Moni

Foreign minister Dipu Moni has snubbed out the chances of caretaker government system during the upcoming national poll.

During a briefing with the heads of foreign missions and international agencies on Sunday, the minister made the comment.

“There is no chance of caretaker government system as the election commission is independent and fair,” the minister asserted, adding that the election system had been changed through a constitutional amendment.

The ruling party has amended the constitution abolishing the provision of a caretaker government that holds the national poll. According to the 15th amendment, the next national poll will be held under an interim government led by the ruling party.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance had been demonstrating in demand of restoring the caretaker government provision since the 15th amendment.

The minister said: “Government is ready for a dialogue with the opposition. It can take place in the parliament or anywhere.”

Couple of weeks ago, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invited the opposition chief to sit for dialogue in a bid to resolve the current political unrest of the country, which was refused by the opposition.

During Sunday’s briefing, Dr Dipu Moni also raised a question, whether the opposition was demonstrating for a caretaker government or to save the war criminals.

Meanwhile, regarding the unresolved issues with India, the foreign minister said the decision were delayed due to India’s internal problems, adding that the issues would be solved soon.
