‘It’s an attack on those who think freely and oppose govt’

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed the attack on his motorcade as an attack on the people who think freely and opposes the government. He made the statement while briefing the media at Chittagong Press Club after the attack on his motorcade on Sunday, reports Bangla Tribune The BNP leader said: “This is not a personal attack but an attack on democracy. It’s an attack on the people who think freely and oppose the government.” Blaming the ruling party for the attack, he said: “This attack has revealed the true character of Awami League. If we are facing this sort of problem then just imagine the situation of the general public.” He also urged the people to unite against this incident. “At least 30 to 40 people attacked the motorcade with batons. At first, they hurled a big stone and broke the windscreen and then attacked us." While talking to the Dhaka Tribune after the attack, Fakhrul said: “It was a serious attack. Awami League men attacked our motorcade with the aim of killing us. “People across the country are being victims of such attacks carried out by the ruling party.” He said BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was severely injured in the attack while some other party men received minor injuries in the incident. Four BNP leaders, including Fakhrul, were injured when the motorcade was attacked when the BNP delegation was on its way to Rangamati. They were scheduled to visit the landslide victims. The other leaders are BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Advisor Major General (Retd) Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, Chittagong District Organising Secretary Shamim.

'Dirty politics over landslide'

Around the same time, in parliament Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said Khaleda Zia was doing dirty politics with the issue of landslide in the Chittagong hill districts. “She is being spiteful against the government, she is lying and saying despicable things,” he said. “Right after the incident the government and Awami League has taken all sorts of steps. Because of these steps, faith has been restored among the public in those areas,” Hanif claimed. Sweden was the first European nation to recognise Bangladesh, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was there at the invitation of her Swedish counterpart, Hanif said. “Does Khaleda know what a pleasure trip is? She can say such things because she does not have any patriotism or Spirit of Liberation War,” he added.
