Islami Oikya Jote chief Nezami dies

The president of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Maulana Abdul Latif Nezami has died at a hospital in Dhaka.

The 84-year-old was rushed to the Islamic Bank Central Hospital just before the evening prayers on Monday, said IOJ Secretary General Mufti Foyzullah.

He was declared dead by the doctors at 8.25pm, Maulana Korshed Alam, who heads the party’s student wing Chhatra Khelafat, told Dhaka Tribune.

Nezami was also the editor of a daily newspaper ‘Doinik Sarkar’.

Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), is one of the allies in the Awami League-led 14-party Grand Alliance.

IOJ had been an ally of the BNP-led 20-party Alliance for 17 long years up until December 2016. Since parting with the BNP, IOJ has been actively trying to get into Awami League’s good graces. In 2017, the party wrote to the ruling party expressing their wish to share constituencies in the polls.

It became an ally of the ruling Awami League after a delegation of its senior leaders went to the Ganobhaban in to hold a dialogue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
