Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has urged his party colleagues to make a list of homeless people across Bangladesh, so that they can be brought under the government’s aid program during the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown.
Quader made the request during a videoconference with Awami League’s relief subcommittee on Thursday.
The ruling party leader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, joined the videoconference from his government residence, while the party relief subcommittee joined from the party president’s office in Dhanmondi.
Awami League Presidium Member Abdur Rahman and Relief Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi were present from the Dhanmondi end.
Speaking to his colleague, Quader said: “I had a phone conversation with the party president [Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina]; she instructed us to help the local administration, to prepare the list of homeless people.
“We will make shelter for the homeless people. We have to ensure they receive the relief, as per as the prime minister’s instruction,” he further added.
“In our country, there are a lot of people who don’t have any shelter. They are used to living near train stations, bus terminals, under the flyovers, and even under the open sky,” Quader said.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised to build shelter for homeless people in Mujib Year. The list of homeless people is already being prepared; our party workers have to add into that effort,” the Awami League general secretary added.
