Dhaka City AL and AL affiliated bodies’ full committee under scrutiny

Committees of the ruling Awami League’s (AL) affiliated organizations and its Dhaka City units are under scrutiny now. The committees may be declared by early April after proper scrutiny, AL sources confirmed.

AL Presidium Member Abdur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday evening: “We have given directions to Dhaka city AL units and other affiliated organizations to submit their full committee list by February 21.”

“I think we can examine all the committees by March and then Party Chief Sheikh Hasina will give the final approval,” Rahman added.

The national conventions of the Awami League’s affiliate organizations Krishok League, Sramik League, Swechasebak League, Jubo League, and Matsyajibi League, were held on November 6, 9, 16, 23 and 26 consecutively. And the North and South unit councils of the Dhaka city Awami League held a meeting on November 30.

Party sources said, except city AL units and Jubo League, all other units have already submitted their comprehensive lists. The committee lists are under scrutiny now.

This correspondent talked to more than five presidents and secretaries of AL affiliated organizations on Tuesday.

Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, president of Dhaka North City AL said they will submit their central body’s list by late February.

Sheikh Asgar Noskar, general secretary of Matsyajibi League said they have submitted their full committee list in due time. Now it is up to the party high command as to  when they will finalize it.

According to party insiders, as part of a continued cleansing action by the Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the organizations are directed to form full committees with leaders having good repertoires.

The country's oldest political party has been struggling with an image crisis ever since allegations of illegal activities, including running casinos in the capital, which surfaced recently against some of its leaders.

As part of this strategy of AL high-ups to remove controversial leaders from affiliated bodies’ central units, a set of new faces will be introduced, said party members.
