Quader thanks Hasina, Rehana, councillors after reelection

Bangladesh Awami League’s newly elected general secretary on Saturday expressed gratitude to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and party councillors for reelecting him for a second term.

“First of all, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our leader Sheikh Hasina. I would also like to thank Sheikh Rehana, another daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” Obaidul Quader said, after he was made second-in-command for a second term at a press briefing held at the Awami League president’s party office in Dhanmondi.

“I further appreciate our 7,000 councillors who reelected me as the party’s general secretary,” he added.

Quader continued that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wanted to leave the party position this time citing her age, but Awami league activists did not let her go.

“On Saturday, Sheikh Hasina declared a partial committee. We hope that within one or two days the full committee will be announced.” he said.

Quader said: “Apart from this, we plan to celebrate a year long Mujib year from March 17, alongside celebrating 50 years of independence.

“We want a smarter Awami League, which will be a summation of tradition and technology.”

Quader vows to continue cleansing drives against corruption, drugs

Earlier in the morning, the road, transport, and bridges minister urged everyone to not assume that the “cleansing drive” against corruption, drugs, and crime has weakened.

Making his statement at the second session of Awami League's 21st National Council at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka last morning, Obaidul Quader said those involved in unlawful activities are under surveillance.

“No one but Sheikh Hasina is indispensable for the party. There is no replacement for her,” said Quader, adding that Awami League has thrived due to people’s love for the party.

He said: "We must reinforce our party to strengthen the government; therefore any internal conflicts within Awami League will not be tolerated."
