BNP starts token hunger strike seeking Khaleda’s release

BNP has started a six-hour token hunger strike in Dhaka, demanding the release of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, and her proper treatment.

The program began at the auditorium of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, at 10:30am Sunday, and is scheduled to end at 4:30pm, reports UNB.

Leaders and activists of BNP and its associate organization joined the program amid tight security.

Senior leaders, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, are expected to address the program.

The party announced the program at a dua mahfil held at its Naya Paltan central office on April 2.

On April 1, Khaleda Zia was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), with severe pain in the joints of her hands and legs, insomnia and high blood sugar level.

Khaleda, a former prime minister, has been in jail since February 8, 2018, after she was convicted in a corruption case. She was later found guilty in another corruption case.

Since her conviction, BNP has been demanding Khaleda Zia’s release and has also accused the government of neglecting her treatment.
