Why was the election deferred?

Speaking to the media about the decision to reschedule the election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said the decision was made following discussions with other commissioners.

Earlier on Sunday, Dr Badruddoza had sent a letter to the Election Commission urging them to postpone the general election.

Jatiya Oikya Front – a political alliance of opposition parties that includes BNP – had also urged the commission to defer the polls by a month.

Earlier on November 8, the CEC had declared December 23 as the date for the general election.

The commission has a constitutional obligation to hold the election by January 28.
