BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the Jatiya Oikya Front has been formed to restore democracy and the voting rights of the people.
“There is no democratic space left in the country. Jatiya Oikya Front has been constituted to restore democracy and the people's voting rights," he said.
The BNP secretary general made the comments at a view exchange meeting with local BNP leaders and activists, held at his residence in Thakurgaon, reports UNB.
A participatory, credible and acceptable election is necessary to ensure functional democracy and strengthen the democratic institutions in Bangladesh, the BNP leader said.
He added that he hoped the entire nation would unite in support of the Jatiya Oikya Front’s demands, which include holding the next polls in a fair and credible manner.
The Oikya Front's seven-point demands also include the dissolution of parliament, formation of a neutral election-time government, reconstitution of the Election Commission, deployment of army, and cancellation of the decision to use EVMs during the national election.
Fakhrul also urged leaders and activists of BNP to prepare for waging a movement to free BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other arrested party members from jail.
Earlier, Fakhrul visited a number of puja mandaps in the Sadar upazila, and exchanged greetings with Hindu devotees on the occasion of Durga Puja.
