Khaleda’s treatment unchanged

A five-member medical board of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital on Sunday examined BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's medical records and decided that her treatment would continue as before.

The hospital’s Director Brig Gen Abdullah-Al-Harun at a press briefing said that the board members went to Khaleda's cabin in the morning and examined all her past medical records.

The board, headed by Dr Abdul Jalil Chowdhury, had examined her health conditions on Saturday, he added.

Al-Harun said: "The five board members on Sunday reviewed her medical reports and decided that her treatment will continue as before until the board meets further."

He said the board might conduct some medical tests too at a convenient time after assessing her complete medical history.

He said the medical board was likely to examine the BNP chief’s health condition further on Monday.

The director said BSMMU Prof Tanzina Parvin was included in the board for temporary period as Prof Sajal Krishna Banerjee of the cardiology department was currently in Barisal.

Responding to a question, he said that the board was formed as per the High Court order and no one from either pro-BNP Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB) or pro-Awami League Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) was included in it.

Earlier on Sunday, Khaleda Zia's four lawyers, led by BNP Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed, met Al-Harun and requested him to ensure their party chief's treatment in line with the High Court's directive.

Talking to reporters later, Moudud said: "We urged the director to ensure Khaleda Zia’streatment and medical board following the court order."

“We will move the High Court if the hospital failed to follow the court orders or Khaleda Zia expresses dissatisfaction with her treatment,” he said.

The former three-time prime minister has been in prison since she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8.

Khaleda was admitted to the BSMMU Hospital on Saturday afternoon after prison authorities shifted her from the old Dhaka central jail for better treatment in response to a High Court order.

The High Court on Thursday had directed the government to immediately admit her to the BSMMU Hospital and form a new five-member medical board to treat her.

On September 16, another government-formed medical board had suggested admitting Khaleda to a hospital like BSMMU,although they said they did not find symptoms of any serious disease in her during medical tests.

On April 7, Khaleda had undergone some medical tests at BSMMU Hospital because of her illness.

BNP has long been demanding shifting of their party chief to United Hospital in the city’s Gulshan for better treatment as the conditions of her left hand and leg were worsening.
