BNP has accused the government of conducting 'pre-emptive attacks' against opposition parties ahead of elections to spread fear among the supporters and suppress the opposition.
“BNP supporters and activists have been implicated in false and fabricated cases as the government is trying to stay in power 'illegally',” Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said at a press briefing at the party's Naya Paltan office on Saturday.
He said the way the ruling party is using law enforcement agencies against them is unprecedented.
Earlier on Friday, BNP claimed that a total of 300,000 leaders and activists of the party and its associate wings have been implicated in 3,000 “false and fabricated” cases since September 1.
Rizvi said the government is illegally keeping party Chairperson Khaleda in prison due to her huge popularity.
Rizvi said the medical board formed to examine Khaleda's health without including any of her personal physicians is a part of the government’s conspiracy.
“The medical board has to be formed by her personal physicians,” he said.
The BNP leader alleged that though the home minister assured that Khaleda’s personal physicians would be included in the board, he did not keep his promise.
On September 9, a BNP delegation met with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and urged him to take steps to ensure Khaleda’s treatment.
Raising concerns over Digital Security Bill 2018, Rizvi said a parliamentary body finalized the much-debated law without addressing opinions of journalists and media owners.
“If the bill is passed it will curb freedom of expression. So we all have to raise voice against this repressive law,” he added.
On September 11, the parliamentary standing committee on post, telecom and ICT ministry finalised its report on the bill.
The bill was placed in parliament on April 9.
