Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said if party authorities agree, his younger brother, AKM Abdul Momen, will compete for his constituency’s seat in the upcoming national polls.
Muhith made the statement after casting his vote at Durga Kumar Government Primary School, at 11am, Monday.
The finance minister has, on several occasions since the 10th national polls, said he would no longer compete for his Sylhet Sadar constituency seat.
“My younger brother Momen will compete for my seat if the party agrees.”
The statement was made months before the announcement of the national polls this year. Through this statement, his brother Momen has publicly been endorsed.
Party insiders said Mesbah Uddin Siraj, central organizing secretary of its Sylhet division unit, has been vying for party approval to contest for the same constituency seat for a long time.
The announcement of the national polls is expected to happen during September this year. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, on several occasions, that the election should take place around December, this year.
