BNP plans Sunday demos across Dhaka

BNP will stage demonstrations across Dhaka, on Sunday, protesting that the police denied permission for the party to hold a protest rally in the city on Sunday.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the decision during a press conference held at the party's Naya Paltan central office on Friday.

"Police have informed us that they will not give us permission to stage our protest rally in Dhaka city on Saturday," he said. "So, we will stage demonstrations in the capital, on Sunday, in protest against it."

Besides, Rizvi said, their party leaders and activists will observe a hunger strike on Monday from 9am to 4pm—either at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, or Mohanagar Natyamancha.  They are demanding the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, and improved medical treatment, for her, in jail.

As a component of the party's country-wide program, BNP was scheduled to hold a rally in front of its central office on Thursday. It wanted to protest the Supreme Court order upholding its stay on the bail granted by the High Court to Khaleda Zia—in a murder case filed in Comilla.

When denied permission to hold the protest rally, the party rescheduled the rally for Saturday.
