Gazipur City polls: Awami League, BNP mayoral candidates cast votes

The ruling Awami League and BNP’s mayoral candidates for Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) have cast their votes.

The voting started around 8am on Tuesday.

BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarker cast his vote at the Bashir Uddin Udayan School and College polling centre at College gate area around 8:15am. Awami League’s Jahangir Alom cast his vote at the polling centre in Kanaiya Government Primary School at Joydebpur.    

Hasan declined to comment about the voting situation as he visited only one polling centre. But he alleged that he heard from his sources that his party’s men are being assaulted by supporters of the opposition candidate. 

“Some of my polling agents are also being driven away from the centres,” he added.

He also alleged that he had information that police has arrested about 10 of his party men —violating the High Court’s ruling asking the authorities not to make arbitrary arrests of BNP followers during the election.

After casting his vote, Jahangir said he would accept the election result—regardless of what it is. .

He rejected Hasan’s allegation, saying the BNP have been making such claims since the start of the polling campaign.

Jahangir requested the voters to exercise their franchise and make the Gazipur City Corporation election a success.
