The mayoral candidates of Awami League and BNP are carrying on their full-fledged campaign ahead of the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election slated for May 15.
With only 10 days left before the voting, Awami League-backed aspirant Talukder Abdul Khaleque has taken the development of the city as his main electoral pledge.
On the other hand, in a bid to win the hearts of the citizens, BNP nominated candidate Nazrul Islam Monju is vowing to run the city corporation, if elected as mayor, as per the people’s wishes.
During his campaign in the city’s Doulatpur area on Friday, Khaleque claimed that Khulna did not see any significant development in the past few years despite having a BNP leader, Moniruzzaman Moni, as the mayor of the city corporation.

Dhaka Tribune“Every example of development visible around the city was done when I was in office (between 2008 and 2013),” he said, adding the people’s support for him had scared the BNP and its candidate that they were planning to foil the polls.
He urged the citizens to choose him to realize the development Khulna city deserved.
Khaleque met and exchanged greetings with voters under wards No 5 and 6 at Doulatpur. He began campaigning from the Mohsin intersection at 7:30am, going to the Doulatpur kitchen market, wholesale market, fish market and rail line areas.
He told people at the kitchen market that if elected, he would undertake development of the market through discussions with the traders there.
Monju, on the other hand, on Friday announced that, if he was elected, his administration would operate following the citizens’ directives.
Campaigning at the city’s Bagmara area, he sought the people’s support and vote while promising rule of people and an accountable, democratic and transparent city corporation.
Monju visited the Bagmara Bridge, Mistripara Bazar and other areas of ward 27, speaking to voters and distributing leaflets.
“The ruling party is afraid of the upsurge of public support for the BNP,” he said.
“They know that their defeat is certain and they want to make sure they win by any means possible. Police and party cadre are attacking BNP activists. We are being charged with false cases,” he said.
“Those who think these things will scare BNP activists away are fooling themselves. We will not go home until the city elections are done,” Monju added.
