BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said he is unsure as to whether it is in fact the Awami League that is running the country.
He made the statement while speaking to journalists on Thursday, after returning from a three-day sick leave.
Mirza Fakhrul said: “Sometimes I wonder if Awami League is even running the country, because I feel as though someone else is. I do not think a political party is running the country.
“I cannot believe that a political party which fought for democracy for so long can butcher it with its own hands the way they have been doing,” he added.
Fakhrul alleged that the government has failed to ensure the minimum rights of Khaleda Zia in jail. “This is unprecedented in any civilized and democratic country.”
He also said the way the government is obstructing their ailing chairperson’s physicians from visiting her in the jail implies that the government is unwilling to allow her to receive proper treatment.
BNP Standing Committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Ray, Senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and Publications Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie were present, among others.
