Chhatra League’s 29th Central Council on May 11-12

The 29th Central Council of Bangladesh Chhatra League is going to be held on May 11-12, according to a statement issued by the organization on Thursday. Speaking at a press conference at the central office of the Awami League in Bangabandhu Avenue, Chhatra League Central Committee President Saifur Rahman Sohag announced the schedule for the council. He said Chhatra League's Dhaka Metro South, Dhaka North, and Dhaka University councils would be held on April 24, 26, and 29, respectively. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the inaugural session, Sohag said. The venue will be announced later, he added. Sohag further said the organization – the student wing of the ruling party – would decide on the maximum age limit to be a Chhatra League leader, as per the prime minister's instruction. According to Chhatra League's charter, leaders of the organization must not be older than 27 years of age. However, during the formation of the 28th committee, the prime minister, who is also the president of the Awami League, raised the maximum age limit to 29 years. The new council is needed to formally replace the incumbent committee led by Sohag and Chhatra League Central Committee General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain. The incumbent committee expired on July 26 last year. In a working committee meeting of the Awami League held at Ganabhaban on March 31, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed the Chhatra League leaders to organize the council before the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is expected to begin this year on or around May 15, giving the council organizers less than six weeks to prepare.
