BNP pays homage to Liberation War martyrs

BNP paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Mausoleum on Monday to mark the 48th Independence Day. With BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia still confined to jail, the party's standing committee members led the tributes at the altar of the memorial in Savar at around 9:15am, before observing a moment of silence. The party leaders then went to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's grave at Sher-e Bangla Nagar and placed another wreath at around 11am. They also offered a munajat to seek salvation for Zia's departed soul. The group included BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury;  and vice-chairmen Abdullah Al Noman, Mohammad Shahjahan and AZM Zahid. Earlier in the morning, BNP hoisted the national flag and the party flag atop its offices, including at its Naya Paltan headquarters. The party's central office was also illuminated. Jatiyatabadi Samajik and Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas), the cultural wing of BNP, arranged a cultural event in the afternoon at Nayapaltan Bhasani auditorium on the occasion. On Saturday, the party chalked out a three-day program, including holding a discussion and taking out a rally, to celebrate Independence Day. The party is scheduled to bring out an Independence Day rally from its central office on Tuesday afternoon. It will also organize a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, in the capital on March 31. The party's different units and associate bodies also took out various programs on Monday, including discussions and essay competitions.
