Obaidul: Appointment of CEC a reflection of people's will

Obaidul made the statement while talking to journalists at the contract signing ceremony for the Third Shitalakhya Bridge, in Dhaka's Le Meridian Hotel Wednesday morning. Pointing at the BNP, he said: “Their approach is to negate everything. “However, I am pretty sure that the BNP will take part in the next election under this Election Commission.” He said that the newly-formed EC seemed good. “We have to wait and see their performance in order to evaluate them.” When asked about the fact that the new CEC was made OSD during the BNP regime, Obaidul said that the CEC had already affirmed that he would not be driven by previous sentiments. "We hope that the next election will be free and fair," he added. Earlier, the contract was signed between the Roads and Highways Department and Sinohydro Corporation Ltd of China, with delegates from both sides present. The Tk4.5 crore project is financed by the Saudi Fund for Development. The construction work will begin in March and is expected to be completed by March 2020, the minister said after the signing ceremony. The bridge will be established at Bandar of Narayanganj. It will provide an alternative route to bypass traffic and facilitate connectivity to the Dhaka-Chittagang, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Mawa highways, said Project Director Md Iqbal.
