The verdict against BNP Chairpeson Khaleda Zia in a corruption case was an outcome of the government's political vengeance and personal resentment, the party has said.
“The verdict has been delivered to establish one party rule and destroy democracy. The people of Bangladesh have rejected the judgment,” BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press briefing at the party's Naya Paltan headquarters on Thursday shortly after the verdict.
The purpose of this judgment was to make one particular person happy, he said.
The Dhaka's Fifth Special Court sentenced BNP chief Khaleda Zia to five years in jail and her son Tarique Rahman and four others 10 years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Ruhul asked the party leaders and activists to organize peaceful protests against the verdict.
“I ask party activists not to resort to violence even if the law enforcers shoot at them. We will deal with the verdict with due legal procedure and political manner,” said the BNP leader.
BNP leader Mirza Abbas said the deliver has been delivered in an attempt to destroy BNP and democracy.
